What is ABA Therapy?

ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) Therapy is a highly effective approach that works to address challenging behavior and encourage skill development. It is commonly used to support children with autism spectrum disorder because it is structured and goal-oriented, which helps children thrive.

ABA Therapy focuses on creating positive behavioral changes. This addresses areas such as communication, social interaction, and self-care, and helps children learn how to play with others. While focusing on positive behavioral therapy, it also helps children deal with aggression and self-injury, which can be common areas where children with autism struggle.

What Does ABA Therapy Include?

As an evidence-based approach to help children with autism spectrum disorder, ABA Therapy involves a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) assessing each child’s behavior, challenges, and strengths. This helps them devise an individualized treatment plan that outlines goals tailored to their needs.

Once a treatment plan is established, your child receives hands-on treatment to help them practice their skills. By using positive reinforcement, children are aware of what behaviors are accepted and which need improvement.

As your child undergoes ABA Therapy at Therapy and Beyond, their progress is constantly monitored so that their treatment plan can change if needed.

Goals of ABA Therapy

Although each treatment plan is individualized, ABA therapy commonly focuses on the following areas:

Communication Skills:

Work on verbal and non-verbal skills so children can interact better with others.

Social Interactions:

Encourage children to have positive interactions with peers, family members, and teachers.

Behavior:

Helping to reduce the actions that lead to self-injury and aggressive behavior.

Independence:

Encourage children to have the confidence to take on daily activities such as dressing and eating on their own.

BENEFITS OF ABA THERAPY

ABA Therapy is proven beneficial for children with autism spectrum disorder because of the outcomes children experience.

Customized Plans

When parents decide to enroll children in ABA Therapy, each child receives their own treatment plan. This is tailored to their own needs and abilities.

Positive Reinforcement

Children are rewarded for positive behaviors. This helps them learn what is acceptable and encourages them to behave that way in their daily lives.

Life Skills Focus

Through ABA therapy, children can build practical skills for everyday life. This helps them to gain the independence and confidence they need to thrive.

Long-Lasting Success

Children who undergo ABA Therapy make developmental gains that last into their daily school lives and beyond.

ABA Therapy at Therapy and Beyond: Our Approach

While implementing the fundamentals of ABA therapy, we tailor each plan to suit your child. We understand that each child is different and benefits from different methods.

Therapy and Beyond provides intensive, individual Applied Behavior Analysis therapy with a foundation in evidence-based research. Before starting therapy, we evaluate each child. From here, we write a report with our professional recommendations for your child.

Once a specific treatment program is devised, we focus on all areas of development. Each child is assigned a Board Certified Behavior Analyst who oversees your child’s progress along with a team of therapists.

We consider parents a crucial part of their child’s therapy team. One of our goals is to help parents become familiar with their child’s program so they can implement the lessons taught in their child’s sessions into their daily lives.

FAQ About ABA Therapy

Is ABA therapy only for children with autism spectrum disorder ?

While ABA is widely used for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder, its principles apply to human behavior on a broader range. ABA techniques are also used in special education, brain injury rehabilitation, developmental delay interventions, and even organizational management.

Is ABA therapy considered a “cure” for autism ?

Autism is a neurological difference, not a disease that can be cured. ABA therapy aims to support autonomy, build practical skills, and reduce dangerous or distressing behaviors. This helps individuals better navigate their environments and achieve their personal goals.

What is positive reinforcement ?

Positive reinforcement is a core principle of ABA. When a desirable behavior is followed by a meaningful reward, such as a favorite toy or access to an activity, the individual is more likely to repeat that behavior in the future.

Does ABA try to stop repetitive behaviors ?

Modern ABA practice distinguishes between harmless repetitive behaviors, such as hand-flapping or rocking, and dangerous behavior. Interventions are typically reserved for behaviors that cause physical harm, such as head-banging, or severe disruption to a person’s ability to learn and function safely.

About 3 years ago, my son started pre-k. He was suspended almost immediately. It started a long, hard journey for us - one filled with meltdowns, struggle, and heartbreak.

As a single mom, I did what I could. I got him on the waitlist for a diagnosis. It took over 9 months - but we finally got it. And then I managed to get him into an ABA for 32 hours a week.

We worked with ABA at every step. I met with his care team daily, and his coordinator once a month, to make sure we were mimicking interventions at home and using similar language. We held him back and then did homeschool for kindergarten to keep my very smart child from falling too far behind. We commuted over an hour each way, four days a week, to keep his care team stable.

Before ABA, my child would have meltdowns that lasted hours. Not tantrums, meltdowns - the type that involved hurting himself, me, and property. Blood, sweat, and tears took on a new meaning for me. I had never worked so hard for something that felt so unattainable.

Thanks to a lot of hard work and the amazing care team at Therapy & Beyond Of Oklahoma, my child went to his first day of school today. He stayed in his regular classroom all morning. He went to lunch and recess, and then kindly asked for a break to the special ed room. He took his break, cooled off and calmed down, and returned to the classroom for the remainder of the day. There were no meltdowns. There have been none since I picked him up.

If you had told me even 2 years ago that Frankie would come this far, I’m not sure I could have believed it. It’s every mother’s dream to set our children up for success, but I had no idea what kind of help ABA could provide. I cannot thank these people enough.

Therapy & Beyond changed our lives for the better. My son went from having massive, destructive meltdowns to naming his feelings, asking for time and space, and processing appropriately. I never could have imagined that the change would be this drastic, and we are so grateful every day for the staff at T&B!

My son has been attending for 2 and a half years, we love it and he loves going everyday. He has made great progress and is able to have fluid conversations, something we weren’t sure was possible in the near future. He has made amazing strides.

Therapy and Beyond has become apart of the family. Each and every staff member loves my son as their own, encouraging him to be his best everyday. We have been at Therapy and Beyond for just over 5 months now and our son has grown leaps and bounds and now verbalized his needs consistently. They are always available to meet or answer questions for support and Nona Clinic Manager has been so accommodating to making sure we have the hours and schedule our little needs to be successful. Another bonus perk is you can recieve speech during ABA sessions meaning 1 stop 2 needs met, what a relief! Sam is so thorough with identifying speech concerns and addressing them. Cannot say enough great things about Therapy and Beyond from the BCBA's Kate and Dena to all the RBT's that are hands on with the kids everyday, a Big Thank You for supporting not only my family but all the families in clinic to create success stories! What a Blessing🥰
Our toddler has been attending Therapy and Beyond in OKC for just over one month now and we are loving all of his progress! The therapists are all so welcoming and are very well educated on ABA practices. They love our son like their own and we are so thankful we found a place that not only helps our son but helps us learn how to be better parents as well! Highly recommend them to anyone considering ABA for their child
